Investigative Work in 2017
2017 investigative work is on the rotation of the bridge
March 2017
Trip by Warminster School Friday 18 March
Saw Royal Navy Lynx helicopters' final flight in farewell tour while setting up for the trip! |
The 42 pupils were split up into two groups. There were more French than English so there were three interpreters |
Maggie led one group round the back to show them three generations of swing bridge, and finer details of Brunel's bridge and the new patches, while Geoff's group were shown the wheels and the work in progress and a fox skull we found |

Farewell photo |
Looking at Maggie's car! |
The wheel is out |
Bob and Martin doing a scientific load-test on a Youngmans Board to see if a board would take the load of a cast iron wheel safely. The answer was 'No', hence the scaffolding trestle we built mid-span between the Bridge and car! |
The wheel is ready to load into the car |
Steady does it. Geoff, Bob and David start to roll it down the ramp on a specially made stand |
Matthew and martin come to the rescue |
Will it fit into the car? |
Matthew moving it in position. Can only take one wheel home at a time! Weight would also be a problem! |
The shells must be reassembled |
The other shell. Funny how you see other helpers by accident |
3 heads are better than none |
back together again |
Bob measuring the wheel |
Maggie and Sal did some weeding, after surveying passers by |
