This time we did not have the old stop as a pattern. Mike had previously dug out all the mess in October 2015. |
Nearly finished. Just need to round to top and put the new cover on |
Investigative Work in 2016
Fourth volunteer day of the year spent drawing the most worn wheel bearing, continuing with renewal of timber stops, and painting and weeding.
We were blessed with another sunny day and lots of teamwork. We also had harbour festival activities to watch.

Mike put a base plate in the sloping hole |
He then started to clear the hole out for the vertical posts, watched by Martyn |
These baulks of timber are heavy |
He then had to hand saw the post, seems happy enough |
Chiselling caused a bit of thought |
Meanwhile Ian got on with preparing the vertical stops using electric tools watched by Geoff |
distance shot showing everyone beavering away. Geoff has gone to help Mike. John is drawing the bearing cap, David is working in the hydraulic ram pit |
Julian came round to do some more filming. Ian brought the wood over |
Geoff gtting the wood to fit helped by Ian |
Bit to big. Just got to get it further into the hole |
Geoff and Mike made adjustments |
Nearly in but not quite |
big relief after it hits the bottom, having received an extra push |
Mike looking pleased with his handiwork with Julian |
Geoff then cut the edge to make it vertical |
Martin came to help Mike put in the vertical baulks. Sal standing by |
First one went in well |
Second one going in |
Bit of a discrepancy |
Sal acted as a pile driver much to Martyn's delight |
Sal danced up and down to the delight of everyone, biut still a bit to go |
A baulk of timber was lifted up for Sal to finish off the job. A good laugh and happy productive job. Just need to round the corners and put on the round cover in due course. |
The pit had debris in from the last floods, and new plants |
David (looking like the headless man) investigates |
Cleaning well |
Clean job. Gas pipe in the foreground for nozzles to keep the area warm in winter |
Used Dacrylite to touch up the areas where paint had flaked off due to inadequate preparation |
Sal preparing the surface |
Martin in another section. It pays to be slim with 10' arms |
Masks and gloves at the ready. Sal and Martin paint |
Ian has been making a superb meccano model at home 3m long. It will be on show at the Model Engineers show in August
