Investigative Work in 2016

Second volunteer day of the year spent tidying up, continuing with renewal of timber stops (this time using a hoist), and cleaning out the wheel pits.
It is clear that the wheel pit area needs to be kept clean as well as the surfaces above because this is how the drainage clogs.
We were blessed with another sunny day and lots of teamwork.

Brunel Swivel Bridge
This time we used a hoist. We started by clearing around the angled wood.
Ian, Mike, Geoff, Victoria, Martyn all hard at work

levering out the verticals
Brunel Swivel Bridge
we were able to lift out the verticals far easier
Brunel Swivel Bridge
The angled piece was then lifted out. Ian looking serious while Martyn clears out the hole
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Some wood sawn off and the angle was lowered back into the hole onto its stud
and marked up
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Bob and Geoff carefully working out the angles
Brunel Swivel Bridge
The adjustments clearly marked on the timber
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Mike teasing Geoff while he turns his attention to the verticals since they
must be the correct height
Brunel Swivel Bridge
the moment of truth as the supports shortened
Brunel Swivel Bridge
The angle is supported to get the vertical in position
Brunel Swivel Bridge
the second vertical dropped back into position
Brunel Swivel Bridge
More hoisting to get edges and slots in line
Brunel Swivel Bridge
finally in position

fascinating to see everyone working away independepently on the same task
bringing water, mixing cement, getting stones, sorting out tools

post in position. Needs a cap in due course

Clear wheel pits

Brunel Swivel Bridge
The wheelpits tend to get clogged up with leaves and litter. The
drains then get blocked and the water can not drain away
Brunel Swivel Bridge
the back scratcher was brought into action to clear out the main rubbish
Brunel Swivel Bridge
hands could clear out the mud. The wire was too soft to get to the drain hole
Brunel Swivel Bridge
the extensible drain cleaner was ideal once one had located the hole
Weeding

Good crop of plants growing which had to go
