Investigative Work in 2016

Third volunteer day of the year spent looking at the most worn wheel bearing, continuing with renewal of timber stops, and cleaning penant flags.

We were blessed with another sunny day and lots of teamwork.

Brunel Swivel Bridge
Tried out a telescopic magnet to see if it could pick up rust flakes from surfaces- very successful
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Mike got bitumin, old engine oil, a new galvanised cap and more tarmac to finish off the stop
Brunel Swivel Bridge
The cap fitted beautifully
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Geoff came to inspect
Brunel Swivel Bridge
good coating to protect the wood
Brunel Swivel Bridge
ready for next coat in the sunshine. It was great to see Graham come all the way from Birmingham to admire
the handiwork and will now start making the end stop
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Ian started to make the other stop at the end of the track using chisel
Brunel Swivel Bridge
An hour later the saw came out
Brunel Swivel Bridge
then the plane. Hard work
Brunel Swivel Bridge
better surface after 3 1/2 hours but more needs taking off the side. Watch this space

Check and measure worn wheel bearing

Brunel Swivel Bridge
Maggie and Sal started to erect the scaffolding to lift the most worn wheel (nw corner)
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Sal undid the nuts
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Geoff checked the scaffolding and the hoist
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Maggie operated the hoist
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Having lifted the wheel, Graham, Sal and Geoff mark and inspect the bearing on the inner edge
Brunel Swivel Bridge
looking at the bearing of the outside edge too
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Sal trying to separate the bearing from the cap
Brunel Swivel Bridge
cap and bearing separated. Wonder when they were separated last?

Clean flagstones

Brunel Swivel Bridge
Graham also cleaned off the flagstones we had found when excavating
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Maggie also helped
Brunel Swivel Bridge
They came up well. Far better to use them in a nice location than being buried again
Brunel Swivel Bridge
Maggie and Sal even had time to chat and enjoy the unexpected sunshine
