Sunday 20 September
26 historic structures engineers from all over the country came to visit. The trip was organised by David Greenfield and Andrew Swift. It was good to see Andrew Neale the docks engineer, George Waite the riveter, Graham Laucht the Brunel historian again who all taked to the visitors about their work. Bob Watkins talked about his drawings, Mike Bone talked about funding, Maggie and others showed them the pintle and turntable. We were also treated to two swings of the Plimsoll bridge and to the Pride of Bristol going through the locks on a loveley sunny day. We could have spent all day there, but the visitors all had trains to catch. We were privileged to have Julia Elton visiting (who hosted us to a dinner at Clevedon Court the previous night. Long standing member of the Newcomen Society and president from 2005-2007, antiquarian bookseller specialising in the history of engineering from the seventeenth century)

quite a gathering in the end. All had to get off as the Plimsoll bridge swung, due to the limited height of the Plimsoll bridge above the Brunel bridge |
