Investigative Work in 2016
Fifth volunteer day of the year spent cleaning the most worn wheel bearing, continuing with renewal of timber stops, and weeding. Also started doing an informal usage flow, people come from all directions.
Cloudy weather but didnt quite rain on us. We also went to see Ian with his wonderful 9' model of the bridge up at the Model Engineers Show in Thornbury

A proud Ian with his wonderful 9' model that took him 2 years to build out of mecanno |
Ian talking to Maggie. It was a good opportunity to tell more people about the project |

the turntable |
Quite handy being under the bridge as one can take photos unobserved!
Sal and Maggie got on with the weeding and cleaning out the wheelpit area again |
|
lots of moss growing in the mud which was removed by using a tamper |
the area round the rail received attention too |
David cleaned out the ram area again. Water and mud comes into here since it is lower |
Clean again |
Mike started to cut the stop to shape the hard way |
Geoff cuts the support using power tools |
Geoff then continued to cut the edge using power tools- but limited by depth of blade |
Bob shaping the support while Mike continues to round the edge |
Bob chisels out the rest. The newly fabricated metal cap can be seen on the wall |
Different view showing the tools of the trade. Alf came to see what we were up to |
Bob continues fashioning the support, Mike watches having just painted the cap, Julian came to video us and filmed Sally cleaning the bearing cap |
support finished, a mixture of old oil and wood preserver has been applied. |
another bit of wood has been put in place to take the studding |
More chiseling for the hand made square washers |
Studding goes in in both directions |
David (looking like the headless man again) finishes off the work |
Sal cleaning the bearing- hexagonal on the back to stop slipping |
